Butterfly weed is a native perennial that is prized for its hot orange color and ability to take the heat and drought. Clusters of orange flowers appear in summer and are frequently visited by butterflies; hence the common name. Plants thrive in poor soil conditions or rocky sites. They rarely have insect or disease issues and are deer resistant. Seed pods make good dried cut flowers.
