Pig squeak makes an excellent, non-invasive ground cover for shaded areas and has multi-season interest. Spikes of pink flowers appear in spring before disappearing amid the thick, dark green, somewhat-heart shaped leaves. Leaves turn a beautiful shade of burgundy-red in fall and are considered semi-evergreen. Plants do best in part to full shade in average well-drained soils. Deer and rabbits often avoid Bergenia and the flowers and leaves can be used in floral arrangements.

Pig squeak gets its name from the sound that is made when rubbing a leaf between one's thumb and finger.
