Butterfly bushes are highly sought after plants for colorful, heat-loving blooms and usually make a statement in the perennial border. Throughout most of the summer, the shrubs are covered in arching wands of fragrant bright bluish-purple flowers that are adored by butterflies, hummingbirds, and other pollinators. Leaves are dark green and make a great contrast against the flowers. Butterfly bushes are also rabbit resistant, make excellent cut flowers, and are disease/insect resistant. They do best sited in full sun in well-drained soils. Treat like a perennial in northern climates where it is advisable to cut them back to the ground in the spring. Pugster Blue® was selected for its dwarf habit, sturdier branching, and extended bloom period; often blooming without deadheading into autumn.
