Chestnut oaks are a native of the United States and are often found on dry slopes. They are characterized in the landscape by their large, rounded canopies covered in elliptical, leathery, toothed leaves which are dark green on top and slightly fuzzy and grey underneath. Leaves turn an undistinguished combination of yellow and brown in autumn. In maturity, acorns with warty caps are produced and provide a good food source for wildlife. Chestnut oaks thrive in moist, well-drained soils in full sun, but are at home in dry, rocky/chalky soils and are an excellent choice for sites with droughty conditions.
