Alpine currants are very hardy and durable shrubs that are often planted to make compact, dense hedges or borders. Insignificant chartreuse flowers appear in spring before fading against the lobed, bright green leaves. Fall color can be a dull yellow and since most are male clones, they are considered fruitless as well. The cinnamon colored bark can be flaky and peeling; adding interest and texture to the winter landscape. Alpine currants have few disease or insect issues and are considered rabbit resistant. They are at home in average, well-drained soils in full sun to part shade. If growing conditions are met, they can tolerate full shade, periods of drought, salts, clay, and other urban conditions.
