Daylilies are probably the easiest plants to cultivate, come in a dizzying assortment of colors and shapes, and thrive on neglect. Although plants prefer fertile soils and medium moisture, they can grow in most soils and other growing conditions and tend to overcome heat and humidity. The fine grass-like foliage emerges in early spring and lasts throughout the growing season before putting out flowers in summer. Daylilies will form thick clumps over the years and should be divided every three to four years, meaning you can quickly multiply just a few plants. Flowers come in every color except blue, and flower shapes can be quite interesting, depending on cultivar; some even seem to sparkle as if covered in tiny glitter. Plants are also mostly disease and insect resistant and rabbits tend to avoid daylilies. 'Monterrey Jack' is a ruffled pale yellow daylily with a red ring in the center and all of the 5in flowers seem to be covered in diamond glitter.
