Dwarf burning bush is the quintessential shrub for Midwest gardens/landscapes and is known for its fiery blazing red fall color. Small, medium-green elliptical leaves cover the shrubs throughout the growing season and often hide the small chartreuse spring flowers and tiny orange-red fruits in autumn. Bark and stems are often corky and rough looking which adds texture and intrigue to the winter landscape. Although the word dwarf is a misnomer, the shrub is easily pruned and makes an excellent hedge or border planting. Burning bushes do best in average, well-drained soils in full sun to part shade, but will tolerate however clay, occasional drought, salts, variances in soil pH, and other urban growing conditions. For best fall color and overall health, they do benefit from a layer of mulch as it keeps the soil more consistently moist. Fire Ball® was selected for its improved cold hardiness (there is no die-back in spring), striking fall color, tighter branching, and smaller size.
