Large-leafed hydrangeas are very popular landscape specimens mostly in part due to their blue flowers and length of bloom. Endless Summer® is arguably the most planted hydrangea across the United States and does fantastic in areas with ample rainfall and consistent temperatures. They are characterized by their large, rounded flower heads in shades of blue (in acidic soil) or pink (in alkaline soil) that appear in midsummer and continue, often with a repeat blooming period, into fall. Large, elliptical dark green toothed leaves cover the plant for the majority of the growing season before turning yellow/purple in fall, although fall color is often insignificant. Large-leafed hydrangeas do best in rich, moist, well-drained soils in part shade and benefit from a layer of mulch and sited in a protected area. Endless Summer® was selected for its ability to grow flowers on new and old wood and improved winter hardiness when compared to other large-leafed hydrangeas. To get blue flowers, aluminum sulfate should be added to the soil according to the product's instructions whereas adding garden/horticultural lime will result in pinker blooms.
