Japanese stewartia is a summer blooming ornamental tree that is favored for its camilla-like blooms. These white blossoms with orange centers start appering around July and look striking against the dark green elliptical foliage. By autumn, its leaves will turn varying shades of purple, bronze, and reddish-orange. Its exfoliating reddish bark also adds texture and intrigue to the winter landscape. Stewartia does best in moist, rich, slightly acidic well-drained soils in full sun to part shade. A thick layer of mulch is best to maintain even soil moisture. They also do best in sheltered location. Virtually disease and insect resistant.
