The American pawpaw is a tropical looking U.S. native that is known for its large edible fruit. In early spring, cup-shaped, nodding marron-purple flowers show up on branches and eventually produce elongated, mango-shaped edible fruit that mature to a dark brown by autumn. Flavor is similar to bananas or custard. The larger, slightly drooping oblong leaves turn a yellow-green in fall. Pawpaws do best in moist to wet, well-drained soils in full sun, although they can tolerate part shade and periods of standing water. No major insect or disease issues and are reportedly deer resistant. Can form colonies from root suckers over time.

Asimina triolba is an Iowa native.
