Porcupine grass is known for its horizontal bands of yellow/chartreuse and can reach large heights that make it perfect for borders, screens, or in mass. Plumes of reddish-bronze seed heads rise out of the upright clumps in late summer and the whole plant fades to beige by autumn. If foliage is left through winter, it can provide great texture and interest in the landscape. Porcupine grass is very adaptable to soils and other growing conditions including drought, clay soils, wet conditions, etc. 'Tiger Tail' has better cold hardiness and heavier flowering than other cultivars of porcupine grass.
