Privet is one of the most common plants used for hedges due in part to its fast growth rate, cold hardiness, and durability. In Iowa, it is considered deciduous and is grown for its glossy green leaves and white, fragrant, summer flowers. Small, black fruits may appear by autumn and are quite ornamental. Straight Talk™ was selected for its very narrow habit, cold hardiness, and rebounds well after heavy pruning. Privet do best in well-drained soils in full sun to part shade and are excellent at tolerating drought, urban conditions, and other dry sites.
