'P.J.M.' rhododendrons are an outstanding shrub for midwest landscapes due in part to their tolerance of alkaline soils and better cold hardiness than other members of the genus. They bloom in early spring, when most other plants are just waking up, with star-like mauve flowers, often flecked with spots in the throat. They look striking against the dark green leathery leaves and make the shrub glow in the shade. Rhododendrons are considered evergreen, though in northern climates this is only partially true, and in autumn the leaves will darken and turn shades of purple. 'P.J.M.' does best in acidic, fertile, well-drained soils in shade with a good layer of mulch for moisture retention. They will tolerate however alkaline soils. Rabbit resistant.
