Spiderwort is an Iowa native that is loved for its intense blue, late spring flowers. Although each three-petaled flower only lasts a day, it blooms for a very long period - several months for cultivated selections. Leaves tend to be long, narrow blue-green and form a thick mop of sedge-like stems. Most spiderworts are spreading clumps, but 'Concord Grape' has a more compact, floriferous habit with purple-colored flowers instead. Spiderworts grow best in areas of full sun to part shade in well-drained soils, however they can stand many soil conditions as long as they are not severely compacted.
