Witch hazel is the perfect four season tree/shrub due in part to the fact it can bloom in early winter! The fragrant flowers are seen as scraggly yellow petals blooming on branches in late fall/early winter which lead to small brown seed capsules that mature over the winter and into spring. Medium green leaves are oval in nature with wavy edges and change to shades of yellow in autumn. Witch hazel prefer average, moist, well-drained soils in full sun (though they can tolerate clay) and benefit from a layer of mulch for moisture retention. No serious insect or disease problems and deer tend to overlook witch hazel.

Hamamelis virginiana is an Iowa native.
