Barberries are one of the most seen shrubs in Midwestern landscapes and re planted for their adaptability and dependability. Plants are recognized by their tiny, oval leaves that come in colors varying between red, purple, or chartreuse. They have inconspicuous yellow flowers that are often hidden by foliage and mature into tiny orange fruit by autumn. Barberries are covered in minute thorns and care should be taken when pruning or where planted in areas with pets/small children. Fall color is varied and is often good shades of red, orange, and yellow. They thrive in average, well-drained soils in full sun, however they can withstand periods of drought, salts, heat, clay, and other urban growing conditions. They can be aggressive in northern climates. 'Orange Rocket' was selected for its orange-red new growth that fades to purple-green before turning vivid orange-red again in the fall.
