Ohio buckeyes are best known for their shiny, brown seeds that children often carry around for good luck. They can be identified easily in the landscape by their rounded canopies that are covered in palm-shaped bright green leaves that change to yellow (orange-red sometimes) in autumn. Fragrant, tower-like chartreuse flowers appear mid-spring and eventually lead to the glossy brown fruit that most are familiar with. Ohio buckeyes do best in moist, well-drained soils in full sun to part shade. Trees benefit from a thick layer of mulch as leaves can scorch during summer months in dry conditions. They can also be sensitive to transplanting due to their taproot system.
Aesculus glabra is an Iowa native.
