Tallhedge buckthorn is primarily used as a hedge or natural screen and is admired for its airiness in the landscape. Plants do best in moist, well-drained soils in full sun, however they can tolerate poor soils and part shade. Glossy, dark green oval leaves cover the plant throughout the growing season and can persist on the plant into autumn. Ruby red fruit is produced by midsummer changing to black by autumn. The twigs can be seen growing upright, often twining into each other, creating a columnar habit.
