Fernleaf buckthorn is primarily used as a hedge or natural screen and is admired for its airiness in the landscape. Plants do best in moist, well-drained soils in part shade, however they can tolerate poor soils and full sun. Dark green leaves are narrow and linear making them seem fern-like from a distance. Ruby red fruit is produced by midsummer changing to black by autumn. Leaves will change to a yellow-brown color in fall. The thin narrow twigs combine to form a vase-shaped architecture which adds interest to the winter landscape.
