Bugbane, or snakeroot, is an excellent large perennial for the back of the shade border. Its dark "chocolate" colored foliage adds a nice backdrop for other lighter colored shade perennials. In late summer, tall spikes of mauve-pink, lightly fragrant flowers tower above and fade to white as they age. Flowers will bend towards light giving them a slight gooseneck appearance at times. Bugbane does best in shaded, moist, well-drained soils and benefit from a layer of mulch and compost. Plants can be slow to establish. Formerly known under the genus Cimicifuga.
