Clematis are often called the "queen of the vines" because of their extremely showy summer flowers. Sweet autumn clematis is a popular cultivar that is sought after for its extremely fast growth rate and creamy white, fragrant flowers that bloom at the onset of autumn. Medium-green leaves cover the vines throughout the growing season and once flowers fade, they get very ornamental silvery seed heads. Sweet autumn clematis grows best in average, well-drained soils in full sun to part shade. Their growth will also benefit from a thick layer of mulch. Sweet autumn clematis blooms only on new wood (clematis groups 3) and can be pruned to the ground in fall/spring. It can be assertive in the landscape if it finds a place it likes and can reseed.
