Norway spruce is one of the best types of spruce for Iowa landscapes due in part to their fast growth, better heat/humidity tolerance, and ability to withstand some periods of drought. Dark green needles (new growth is bright green) surround the stems and long, slender brown cones hang from branch tips. 'Cupressina' was selected for its columnar habit and better tolerance to heat and humidity than the species. It is also noted for its ability to withstand heavy snow loads in winter. Norway spruce do best in slightly acidic, well-drained soils in full sun. Trees show some tolerance to urban conditions and drought in maturity.
