False sunflowers are very hardy, durable natives that bloom endlessly from mid-summer to frost. Often their flowers are bright yellow, but 'Bleeding Hearts' is one of the first seed strains to have no yellow in the flower at all. Hues of fiery orange and red contrast well against the dark green-purple, scabrous leaves. The blooms attract butterflies and pollinators alike and do well as a cut flower for the vase. False sunflowers do best in well-drained, average soils in full sun and can withstand periods of drought once established. Deadheading will help extend the bloom season.
Heliopsis helianthoides var. scabra is an Iowa native.
