Goldenrod is identified by its narrow dark green leaves on stocky stems but is at its best in early fall when it explodes into long, arching stems of golden flowers that attract butterflies and other pollinators. It rarely needs staking, and unlike its cousins, does not spread but rather forms tight clumps in the perennial border. Goldenrod does best in full sun to part shade in average, well-drained soils although it is quite tolerant to drought and clay. Deer resistant and relatively insect/disease resistant. Goldenrods have been wrongfully accused of causing hay fever which is actually an allergic reaction to wind-borne pollen from other plants such as ragweed which flower at the same time and may be growing close together. 'Little Lemon' is one of the most compact forms of goldenrod on the market today.
