Panicle hydrangeas are another good choice for midwestern gardens because of their durability, tolerance of our growing conditions, and ability to survive and thrive in full sun. They often tolerate a myriad of growing conditions, including tolerances to urban sites, full sun, and better cold hardiness, but do prefer being kept cool (attainable with a layer of mulch). Royal Star™ Phantom hydrangea is a remarkable panicle hydrangea with the largest flower heads of any of its species - up to 15 inches long. The conical color-changing blooms unfold midsummer as a creamy white, then graduate to a blushing, soft pink as the summer progresses. A heavy bloomer with sturdy-stemmed flowers that do not flop. It was selected for its very large, rounded flower heads that fade to soft pink, dense habit, and stiff stems that hold the flowers upright.
