Japanese iris are different than traditional iris in that they enjoy very wet conditions. 'Pinkerton' shines in the early summer garden (blooming after bearded and Siberian irises), sporting large, flat, beardless pink blooms that rise out of clumps of bluish-green, narrow, sword-like leaves. Its strong stems also make it a wonderful cut flower. Japanese iris are also relatively disease and insect resistant unlike their cousin, the bearded iris. Site them in moist to wet (or even halfway submerged in bodies of water), slightly acidic, fertile soils. However, in winter, they can succomb to root rot in wet soils, so for Iowa, it is best to grow Japanese iris in pots where they can be moved in fall/winter to drier conditions. Japanese iris rhizomes should be placed 2" below soil level for best growth.
