Eastern red cedar is a very common tree found in Iowa and is appreciated for its use as a source of aromatic wood. Often the foliage is blue-green, aromatic, and arranged in scale-like leaves along the branches. Juniper berries may be present throughout the growing season. Junipers do best in average, well-drained soils in full sun. They are intolerant of wet conditions. 'Grey Owl' is a beautiful cultivar of red cedar with silvery-gray foliage and wonderful aroma when brushed against. It makes an excellent specimen or plant for massing due to its wide spreading habit. Better color through winter than other cultivars.
Juniperus virginiana is an Iowa native.
