Little bluestem is a native prairie grass that is exceptional for site adaptability, addition of color to the landscape, and for its cold hardiness. 'Chameleon' is a color-changing spectacle in the garden. Its upright narrow leaves emerge striped green and cream before developing pink to light purple tips. Spikey blooms develop in late summer and hold up well through midwestern winters. Tolerates clay, drought, alkaline, and other poor soils as well as high heat and humidity. It is also known to be deer resistant and erosion tolerant.
Schizachyrium scoparium is an Iowa native.
