London planetrees have historically been used as boulevard/urban trees in Europe because of their fast growth and tolerance to urban conditions/pollution. However, better urban trees have come to the market since its introduction in the 1640's. London planetrees are very massive; all parts of the tree seeming to be large, from the branches, seeds, leaves, and trunk (as wide as 3-8ft in diameter at maturity). Its maple-like leaves are a medium green throughout the growing season, and by autumn, fade to a yellow/brown. Gnarled seed ball clusters hang in pairs on the tree into late fall before falling. The most attractive thing about these trees is its brown exfoliating bark that seems to fall off like puzzle pieces to reveal white, creamy inner bark. If given a large spot in well-drained, moist soils in full sun, London planetree will take off with little help. 'Bloodgood' was selected for its slight resistance to anthracnose.
