Black oaks have a large presence in the landscape and are identified by their broad, open-canopied architecture. Pointed, lustrous dark green lobed leaves cover the tree throughout the growing season before changing to a mix of yellows, oranges, and browns in autumn. Acorns (once the tree reaches maturity) ripen every two to three years in autumn and are a great source of food for wildlife. Black oaks do best in moist, well-drained soils in full sun but will tolerate varied soil sites and conditions.
Quercus velutina is an Iowa native.
