Panicle hydrangeas are another good choice for midwestern gardens because of their durability, tolerance of our growing conditions, and ability to survive and thrive in full sun. Summer tends to be the most noteworthy season because of the terminal inflorescences of white flowers that bloom for weeks at a time. For winter interest, flower heads can be left on once they turn brown to add texture. Panicle hydrangeas often tolerate a myriad of growing conditions, including tolerances to urban sites, full sun, and better cold hardiness, but do prefer being kept cool (attainable with a layer of mulch). Vanilla Strawberry™ hydrangea came from France and was selected for its very large, rounded white flower heads that fade to a mixture of pinks and reds on cascading stems. This particular form has been shaped and pruned to grow as a single trunk tree.
