Pig squeak makes an excellent, non-invasive ground cover for shaded areas and has multi-season interest. Spikes of blush-pink flowers appear in spring before disappearing amid the thick, dark green, somewhat-heart shaped leaves. Leaves turn a beautiful shade of burgundy-red in fall and are considered semi-evergreen. Plants do best in part to full shade in average well-drained soils. Deer and rabbits often avoid Bergenia and the flowers and leaves can be used in floral arrangements. 'Peppermint Patty' was selected for its larger flowers and white/pink flower color combination.
Pig squeak gets its name from the sound that is made when rubbing a leaf between one's thumb and finger.
