Pin oak is an excellent choice for a shade or street tree in soils prone to wet conditions. They have a large presence in the landscape and are identified by their elliptical/pyramidal architecture. Pointed, glossy dark green lobed leaves cover the tree throughout the growing season before changing to a mix of reds and oranges in autumn. Small acorns (once the tree reaches maturity) ripen in autumn and are a great source of food for wildlife (although Pacific Brilliance™ produces fewer than the species). Pin oaks do best in acidic, moist soils in full sun and will tolerate occasional flooding, poorly drained soils, salts, and clay. Pacific Brilliance™ is also noted for its upright, ascending branching unlike the drooping branches of regular pin oaks.
Quercus palustris is an Iowa native.
