Prairie dropseed is an excellent groundcover grass for Iowa landscapes due in part to its tolerance of drought, rocky soils, urban conditions, and clay. Plants form rounded mounds of arching, bright green, hair-like blades that changes to a golden orange in fall. Seed heads rise above in summer in panicles of pinky-brown heads that have a slight fragrance of coriander. Prairie dropseed is insect and disease resistant and is often overlooked by deer. It grows best in drier soils in full sun, but tolerates a wide array of conditions. It is slow to establish however.
Sporobolus heterolepis is an Iowa native.
