American lindens (or basswood) are popular flowering trees and are usually recognizable in the landscape by their pyramidal shape. They make great shade trees in Iowa due to their tolerance of drought and clay soils; preference however is to full sun in well-drained, loamy soils. American lindens can have bicolored leaves and are a glossy dark green above with silvery undersides. In summer, small, fragrant pale yellow flowers appear and by autumn turn into attractive nutlets. Fall color varies between a pale green/yellow. Honey and sap of basswood are often collected and used in gourmet food markets and the trees are used to make furniture, shipping crates, etc. 'Redmond' is noted for its excellent pyramidal form and dense branching.
Tilia americana is an Iowa native.
