Midwestern gardeners seemingly love rose of Sharon for the hollyhock/hibiscus looking flowers that bloom endlessly all summer long. Double pink flowers are produced on upright, dense shrubs that have toothed, medium-green leaves. No autumnal color, but the bloom period spans months, blooming from mid-summer to frost. Rose of Sharon does best in average, well-drained soils in full sun to part shade, but tolerates a wide range of soil conditions including drought, long periods of heat and humidity, and compacted/poor soils. Japanese beetles can be a problem in late summer.
