Witch hazel is the perfect four season tree/shrub due in part to the fact it can bloom in winter! The fragrant flowers are seen as scraggly red/yellow/orange petals blooming on branches in mid to late winter which lead to small brown seed capsules that mature in autumn. Medium green leaves are oval in nature with wavy edges and change to shades of yellow in autumn. Witch hazel prefer average, moist, well-drained soils in full sun (though they can tolerate clay) and benefit from a layer of mulch for moisture retention. No serious insect or disease problems and deer tend to overlook witch hazel.
