Yews are one of the most popular plants for hedges or topiaries and are less susceptible to winter burn than boxwood and known to tolerate heavy shade. Their paired thick, dark green needle-like foliage remains green all year long and, if a female yew is planted, will have bright red berry-like fruit on branches too. Yews prefer to be grown in well-drained soils in full sun to full shade. They are considered hardy and tolerate urban growing conditions and pruning/shearing very well. Avoid wet or overly moist soils and site in a protected are for best winter protection. 'Taunton' is especially resistant to winter burn and has very glossy, wide spreading foliage.
