Blue oat grass is a cool-season grass that is adored for its thin, wiry blue leaf blades. It is similar in appearance to blue fescue, but gets taller and wider with larger flower spikes. Flower spikes appear in early summer and both the foliage and spikes fade to beige by autumn. Blue oat grass prefers a sunny site in dry, well-drained soils. They are also disease and insect resistant (though crown rot can be an issue in wet soils). 'Sapphire' has smaller, finer textured leaf blades with a more intense blue hue.
