Daylilies are probably the easiest plants to cultivate, come in a dizzying assortment of colors and shapes, and thrive on neglect. Although plants prefer fertile soils and medium moisture, they can grow in most soils and other growing conditions and tend to overcome heat and humidity. The fine grass-like foliage emerges in early spring and lasts throughout the growing season before putting out lavender colored flowers in midsummer. Daylilies will form thick clumps over the years and should be divided every three to four years, meaning you can quickly multiply just a few plants. Plants are also mostly disease and insect resistant and rabbits tend to avoid daylilies.
