European beech is an excellent shade tree on a relatively short trunk that has smooth, dark grey bark that is reminiscent of elephant hide. The medium-green foliage sits on sweeping branches and they in turn change to a gold/bronze color in fall and can persist on the tree through winter. It prefers moist soils, however well drained. Relatively disease and insect resistant. Beech produce triangular shaped fruits called beechnuts that are edible. Deer resistant.
