Kentucky coffeetree makes an excellent alternative to the honeylocust due in part to its attractive bark, compound leaves, durability, and adaptability in the landscape. They do best in moist, well-drained sites in full sun, however they tolerate urban conditions including pollution and have good tolerance to drought and poor soils. Large, bright green compound leaves cover the canopy throughout the growing season before turning a bright yellow in autumn. Brown pods may develop on female trees and can be quite ornamental and add winter interest. Relatively disease and insect resistant.

Gymnocladus dioicus is an Iowa native.
