Commonly seen as street trees or used for dappled shade, honeylocust are indigenous to the United States and are prized for their adaptability and durability. They prefer moist, well drained soils in full sun, however they tolerate a wide range of growing sites, including: drought, clay soils, salts, high heat, humidity, and wind. Small, medium-green leaflets make up the majority of the canopy which, when first emerging, are a bright golden yellow and contrast nicely with mature leaflets. When autumn arrives, all the leaflets turn a brilliant golden yellow. Sunburst® is a thornless, seedless cultivar that is more rectangular in shape and prized for its two-tone coloring of new leaflets.
