The hybrid elm 'New Horizon' was primarily selected for its resistant to Dutch elm disease and other insect pests/diseases. It is smaller in habit than other native elms and is tolerant of alkaline and droughty soils, however it prefers average, well drained moist soils. Elms in general are prized for their ability to withstand various growing conditions (salts, clay, and drought), thus it does well as a street tree or a shade tree. Dark green leaves cover the canopy throughout the growing season before turning an undistinguished russet-red color in autumn. 'New Horizon' also differs from other elms in that is has a more oval, upright growing habit.
