European beech is an excellent shade tree on a relatively short trunk that has smooth, dark grey bark that is reminiscent of elephant hide. Foliage appears red-purple in spring before fading to a darker purple that keeps its color wel all through the growing season. Beech prefer moist soils, however well-drained. Relatively disease and insect resistant. Beech produce triangular shaped fruits called beechnuts that are edible. 'Dawyck Purple' is excellent for small spaces or is useful as a living screen when planted en masse.
