Japanese painted ferns are one of the best plants for shade in part due to their textural form, coloring, and ease of care. They are characterized by fronds of small leaflets in greens, purples, and greys (more green in extreme heat). If planted in mass at about one foot apart, they make an excellent, non-invasive ground cover or border to the shade garden. Excellent when mixed amongst hostas, coral bells, and other green shade perennials. Japanese painted ferns prefer rich, well-drained soils in part shade to full shade in a consistently moist environment. They are disease/insect resistant and rabbits tend to avoid them in search for tastier plants. Winner of the 2004 Perennial Plant of the Year.
