Japanese lilacs make bold statements in the landscape, especially when in bloom. By midsummer, the entire plant is covered in lightly fragrant, cream-colored, cotton candy like plumes that attract butterflies and pollinators alike. Dark green leaves reminiscent of hearts cover the plant throughout the growing season before turning an insignificant yellow brown in autumn. Clusters of brown seed capsules and peeling red-brown bark make an attractive display throughout the winter. Very few disease or insect problems. Japanese lilacs prefer moist, fertile, well-drained soils but tolerate urban conditions and Iowa dry spells with ease. 'Ivory Silk' is more compact in habit than the species and blooms later than most lilacs with an abundance of flowers.
