Magnolias are a welcome site for Iowans in spring because of the multitudes of colorful blooms when nothing else has leafed out yet. 'Royal Star' is known for its large, multi-petaled white fragrant flowers that, against the bleak late winter landscape, seem to appear like stars. Once the leaves appear, they are often elliptical with wavy edges and dark to medium green. Star magnolias prefer rich, moist, well-drained soils in full sun to part shade and benefit from a thick layer of mulch to retain moisture. They are also relatively disease and insect resistant and clay tolerant. 'Royal Star' will perform best when sited in a protected location from wind.
