Ninebark are named for their peeling layers of bark and are considered powerhouses in the landscape due to their dependability, adaptability, and aesthetic value. Late spring brings clusters of small white/pink flowers that cover the shrub before fading to seed heads that can be quite ornamental; some turning red. Foliage is often the main attraction due in part to the varied colors that are available (purple, copper, orange, chartreuse, etc.). The bark is also very attractive during late fall and winter when it is not hidden behind leaves. Ninebark prefer well-drained soils in full sun to part shade and will tolerate most growing conditions, including: clay, drought, erosion, flooding, salts, varied soil pH's, etc. No serious disease or insect issues. Diabolo® was selected for its dark purple foliage and red seed heads.
