Northern sea oats have a very unique seed head that are used in cut flower arrangements and to add intrigue to the garden bed or naturalized area. Broad, medium-green leaves emerge in spring and by late summer, wiry, arching stems of drooping, flat green seed heads appear. They eventually turn a purple-brown and flutter in the slightest breeze. Leaves will change to copper shades after frost before fading to brown in winter. Seed heads add great texture and form to winter landscapes. Northern sea oats do best in medium to moist, well-drained soils in part shade (one of the better grasses for shade gardens). They can reseed and make excellent masses for naturailized areas. No major diesease or insect issues.
